The high pressure exerted forces the impurities to become concentrated on one side of the membrane while only the pure water is able to cross the membrane. This is an extremely effective purification method if the reverse osmosis system is set up with multiple membranes to remove impurities down to the atomic and molecular level. Although, reverse osmosis is an extremely powerful purification method, it is best used as one step in a multiple stage system using other purification methods such as micron sediment filtration, ion exchange/deionization, activated carbon and ultraviolet disinfection.
